Strobists & Portraits...Windstorms & Brainstorms

So I had planned to shoot my M3 as per request of the guys from IND Distribution and the avid fans on several car forums. The goal was to do something sinister...something different than I had been doing with the car of late. Hmm. Well, after brainstorming for a couple days and scouring locations via the Internet and literally driving around, everywhere I had come across just wasn't going to cut it. Most of the abandoned areas I wanted to shoot at were either demolished or car inaccessible. Tres discouraging. I decided to just go ahead and pick up my lighting equipment from Calumet Photo downtown and play it by ear.

While the battery packs for the Calumet strobes were charging up in store, I decided to have a little walk around session to scout for nearby locations. First thing to note. VERY WINDY. I'll get back to this later. Second thing to note. I missed walking around with my iPod and camera gear. It definitely got me brainstorming new ideas for Unscene Media Group (UMG) this year. Here are some results from that little walk-around session:

UMG: Multiplicity I

UMG: Multiplicity II

UMG: Think Big I

UMG: Think Big II

UMG: Outside the Box

After a couple hours, I went back to pick up all the equipment I needed for the shoot. In total it was 2 Calumet 750w strobes, 2 umbrellas, 2 light stands, 2 15 lb. sandbags, and 2 battery packs:

In front of the car it doesn't look like a lot, but it definitely filled up my entire trunk. Anyway, to my dismay the windstorm was still hitting full force...to the point that when I tried to mount an umbrella, it immediately inverted on itself and broke. I was struggling to get it folded again against the wind. Must've looked like a total weaksauce moment from the outside, haha.

OH! So the spot was definitely a "homeless hangout". There were water bottles collected in one area filled with urine and other standard homeless memorabilia scattered around. Pretty sweet (not really). In addition to the fear of late-night mugging, I was getting windstorm-pelted in the face by sand/dirt/rock amidst shooting and positioning equipment...all while briefly getting stuck in the mud and having a lovely piece of building hit me in the head. I guess cool, old buildings have their price. Anyway, here are some pics from this crazy shoot:

Think big.
